Team prepared to defuse crisis situations

Here is a great article on innovative ideas and collaborative efforts at resolving conflict. They are using this tactic for a vast array of fast moving circumstances in an effort to end without violence. Similar to hostage negotiation but for more prevalent calls as well such as domestics and  violent disturbance.  The team is designed to help deescalate tense situations and resolve them without violence if possible… Something to think about as we evolve in our professions.

It's one of those teams you hope never gets called.

But when the Rapides Parish Crisis Negotiation Team is needed, they are trained and ready to go.

"Our ultimate goal is to de-escalate the situation and bring it to a peaceful resolution," said Lt. Robert Helton, commander of the negotiation team.

The 12-member team - comprised of deputies from the enforcement and corrections divisions of the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office and a mental health professional - is called out when there is a hostage situation, someone has barricaded themselves somewhere or if someone is threatening suicide. The team also responds to nearly all of the calls the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) responds to, in case they are needed.

"If we can talk someone out of the house instead of SWAT having to bust down the door, it is safer for the suspect, any hostages and the SWAT team," Helton said.
