Gun scare at Calif. campus tests text-alert system

IRVINE, Calif. — Students and teachers at UC Irvine were shaken Wednesday when officials sent out a campus alert saying they were responding to reports of a camouflaged man with a rifle on campus, a report that was later downgraded when police determined that it was probably just a student carrying a paintball gun.

UC Irvine has a campus paintball team that meets for practice Wednesday evenings, but a past team vice president said that the group doesn't allow members to carry paintball guns on campus and that members never wear camouflage.

Sheriff: Louisiana Eighth Grader Planned School Shooting

LAROSE, La. —  A Louisiana middle school student who stormed into a classroom Monday and fired a gunshot over a teacher's head, then shot himself in a bathroom had detailed plans for a rampage in a journal and suicide note, authorities said.

The 15-year-old student, whose name was not released, fired once around 9 a.m. local time inside a classroom at Larose-Cut Off Middle School, then shot himself in the head, said Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre. He was in critical but stable condition. The teacher had never taught the teen.

Police Arrest 13-Year-Old for School Hit List

NORWALK, Ohio — A 13-year-old Ohio boy has been arrested for allegedly making threats against teachers and classmates. The boy, who had two rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition, had a school hit list, according to reports.

Authorities say officers investigating a missing person report filed by the boy’s parents found a journal with the names of 33 classmates and teachers at Norwalk Catholic School who were indirectly threatened, reported the Associated Press.

The boy was arrested on May 13 after a daylong nationwide search.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say two suburban high school students had a pair of loaded handguns, a spooky drawing depicting a killing and the intention of randomly shooting people on campus.

The boys, ages 15 and 16, were arrested Thursday before any violence, after the older boy's stepfather contacted West Covina police to say his guns were missing from a gun locker. One student was arrested at home and the other at school.

UGA Boosts Security During Manhunt for Prof

University of Georgia officials expressed shock and sadness as police continued the manhunt for George Zinkhan, the marketing professor accused of fatally shooting three people outside a community theater in the small college town of Athens.

Although the campus is operating under its normal class schedule this week, administrators are urging students and faculty to exercise caution until the suspect is apprehended.
